Summary
1883. Thaniel Steepleton returns home to his tiny London apartment to find a gold pocket watch on his pillow. Six months later, the mysterious timepiece saves his life, drawing him away from a blast that destroys Scotland Yard. At last, he goes in search of its maker, Keita Mori, a kind, lonely immigrant from Japan. Although Mori seems harmless, a chain of unexplainable events soon suggests he must be hiding something. When Grace Carrow, an Oxford physicist, unwittingly interferes, Thaniel is torn between opposing loyalties

Summary
Employed as a telegraph operator for the Home Office, synesthete Thaniel Steepleton sees colors in sound and dreams of becoming a musician. But just as Thaniel resigns himself to a dreary life as an underpaid civil servant, someone breaks into his boarding house and leaves a pocket watch on his pillow. The watch leads him to Filigree Street, where he meets gifted Japanese watchmaker Keita Mora who can "remember" the future. However, their budding friendship is complicated by the detonation of a terrorist's bomb, which contains a mechanism strikingly similar to Mori's clockwork creations. -- Description by Gillian Speace
