- Beverly Chappell started what is believed to be the first grieving center for children. Her friend and mentor, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D., strongly supported Chappell's vision for a safe place for grieving children in Portland , Oregon. In the twenty-five years since its inception, The Dougy Center, The National Center for Grieving Children & Families, has influenced the creation of some 165 grieving centers for children internationally
